Pronounced 'ko-may', this eatery reflects the owners' vision of creating a healthier, fresher alternative to fast food for families and busy professionals. KOME's chef, Takaaki Komagata, learned the art of traditional cooking in Tokyo and Kyoto and applies more than 10 years' experience in creating a tantalizing menu of quality sushi and sashimi, teriyaki chicken and the popular beef rice bowl. But the real beauty is the price. It's very affordable, with entrees starting at $2.90, mains averaging around $6.40 and free Japanese tea with every order. They haven't scrimped on space either. Although 50 per cent of their business is takeaway, KOME has a bright and roomy contemporary interior, together with a huge shady alfresco area out front. Little wonder it's bustling at lunchtime with office workers and with families in the evenings and at weekends. It's even become a popular venue for kids' parties.
